Bay of Fundy

As this journey continues towards the northeast, we begin to appreciate the extraordinary majesty of the Bay of Fundy, with its exceptional high tides, which surge twice each day into its harbours and then retreat, leaving extensive mud flats where boats lie grounded until the tide turns. Champlain first explored and mapped what he called “la Baie Française” between 1604 and 1607. The Acadians who settled around the bay drained the marshes for farming, laying the foundation for all future agriculture in this area, and also built ships for trade with New Englanders.

During the nineteenth century, fishing, trading, and shipbuilding continued to support the population, and during the age of sail, hundreds of wooden ships were launched in small harbours around the bay. The built heritage—houses and churches—in this area still show off the carpentry skills of these shipbuilders.
